What Is the Stand-Alone Language Program?
We at NCA want to help families reap the benefits of classical education even if they do not participate fully in our flagship hybrid program. To that end we have developed what we’re calling the Standalone Language Program: individual classes your homeschool student can take whether or not they are enrolled at Newton Classical Academy.
In the 2019–2020 year the two classes we are offering are Latin and Classical Composition. These provide a dual basis for grammar and language (Latin) and persuasive expression (composition). A description of each class follows.
The Latin language is at the heart not only of classical education but also of Western culture. It’s the foundational language of English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and even Romanian. If you know Latin you’re already halfway to knowing each of these languages. You’ll also have a much more thorough knowledge of English grammar than you would otherwise, and you’ll know the source language of medicine, law, government, and theology. In our Latin program, we use Memoria Press’s award-winning Latin curriculum to guide students through this foundational language.
How Old Does My Student Have to Be to Take Latin?
If your student is second grade or above, we can fit them in to whichever level of Latin is appropriate for them. We can accommodate students up to eighth grade for the 2019–2020 year.
How Much Does It Cost?
As a twice-per-week class, Latin costs $200 per quarter. Tuition is due the first day of each quarter.
Often we want our students to be creative, so we tell them to write an exciting story. Classical Composition, however, assumes not that we need to draw out a child’s inborn creativity but that most children need to be taught a set of time-tested principles before creative expression is possible. Only once they have been given wings can they learn to fly. If a person is told to make something creative, they need to have a set of tools to work with first. Classical Composition provides those tools. Classical Composition teaches students to express themselves with grace, eloquence, and persuasiveness, whether they are writing a story or discussing politics.
How Old Does My Student Have to Be to Take Composition?
Like in Latin, they can jump in based on their age, maturity, and prior education. We will assess your student and place them in the class that is the best fit for them. They need to be able to read and write fluently to begin. Usually that’s third grade at the earliest.
How Much Does It Cost?
Same as Latin: $200 per quarter, due on the first day of each quarter.
