Class Descriptions

Writing

Hello, my name is Amanda Friesen. I have been an educator since 1990. Upon graduating from Wheaton College with a degree in Elementary Education, I taught 1st grade for six years. My husband Paul and I have four children, all of whom were homeschooled using the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) curriculum. Over the years I have taught a variety of home school co-op classes. My most rewarding experience has been teaching writing composition. With over ten years of experience using IEW, I delight in helping students discover the tools for effective communication.  I especially enjoy teaching IEW to every type of learner. The IEW composition course can be easily expanded to inspire the verbose student to greater clarity. The course is also designed to be adapted to suit the needs of the struggling learner. This fall I look forward to teaching two levels of IEW courses: Wonders of Science Writing Lessons for 3rd-6th-grade students and Following Narnia: The Lion’s Song for 6th grade and up. (First-year IEW students in the middle grades are encouraged to join Wonders Of Science.) Classes are held in Newton at St. Luke’s Evangelical Church each Tuesday, beginning September 19. Enrollment deadline is September 12.

Spanish

Hi, I’m Natalie Friesen (Amanda Friesen’s sister-in-law.)  I grew up in Ferndale, Washington, and have a teaching degree from Western Washington University.  I starting teaching my stuffed animals at age three and have since grown up to teach in Washington state and abroad in public and private schools and homeschool co-ops. Before moving to the Newton area, I was the high school literature and Spanish teacher at a small Christian school in Washington state. My husband and I met in Peru when I taught with South America Mission. We have two homeschooled children.

This is a lively, conversational, Spanish-immersion class. Students will be able to speak, read, and write beginning Spanish by the end of the year. The workbook we use is simple with a lot of interactive in-class games and activities. Students will also receive weekly links to YouTube videos covering the week’s vocabulary for additional pronunciation and review practice.  For a great overview of the workbook and topics, check out this link: https://www.envivopublications.com/.

(Please note: A  typical Spanish 1 middle/high school class would cover books titled Level 1 and Level 2 in first year. We will cover only the Level 1 book  as we meet only once a week  The topics for grades 4-8 and 9-12 are the same. The books differ only in illustrations.)
